The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois (NKFI) announces the 35th Annual “Gift of Life Gala: Coming Together As A Team” virtually on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. The evening will benefit the NKFI mission to improve the health and well-being of those at risk or affected by kidney disease through free screening programs and community health initiatives in Illinois.
Paying homage to the spirit of teamwork, NKFI along with Chicago White Sox Charities will honor the memory of legendary broadcaster and pitcher Ed Farmer, posthumously, with the “Gift of Life Award.” 30 years ago, Ed was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease at the age of 40 and later received a transplant from his brother, Tom. Ed was passionate about kidney disease and often returned to Harvard, where his transplant was performed, to speak with current patients. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White will present the award to Darrin Jackson, WGN radio broadcaster and organ donation activist, who will accept the award on behalf of his late radio partner, Ed Farmer.
Illinois State Senator Mattie Hunter will also be recognized with the “Gift of Life Award” for her efforts in spearheading the Kidney Disease Prevention and Education Task Force. The “Corporate Partner Award” will be given to Baxter International, Inc. for their continuous support of NKFI and its mission for more than 20 years.
Pat Tomasulo, sports anchor and reporter at WGN-TV, will serve as master of ceremonies and host the evening’s events. Ballpark favorites such as peanuts and popcorn will be sent to all guests in advance to enjoy during the program. Together as a team, the virtual gala will raise awareness of kidney disease and bring together supporters of organ donation.
